I'd say for PvE: it's a close call between Rits and Sins. In PvP (low level PvP at least): Mesmers. |

From running missions im seeing moslty Necros and Rits nowadays. Assassins are relatively rarely played outside of SC and farming from what I noticed.
Id list them in regular gameplay (no farming and no SC) like this; 1. Necro 2. Rit 3. Monk 4. Warrrior 5. Ele 6. Ranger 7. Assassin 8. Mesmer 9-10. Dervish / Paragon (as I never really see them in PvE play much at all. This might cange after the Derv Update goes live in 2095 though) |

I had the idea that the most played class would be somewhat mirrored by fan forum activity, so I counted the threads and posts of my most favorite forums: www.wartower.de (German) and www.guildwarsguru.com (US). I sorted the tables by the last column "Percent threads per day", as this seems to me the most significant indicator of the interest in a class. According to this, the warrior is probably the most played class, followed by the monk (german community) or the assassin (US community).
Also included in the picture is a Wartower poll that started December 2006 and whose last entry was September 2009. It was made in the hype of the 600hp monk duo farming, so today the monk is probably not as popular any more as in this poll. Please note that I normalized the "... per day" fields by the number of days the classes are available, so we can compare the activity for the old classes like the warrior to the newer classes like the dervish. There are interesting differences between the german and the US communities. I don't know if this is a difference between the ingame player communities or between the forum communities. Perhaps a difference between forum moderation styles. Or it is really a difference in the behaviour of the players. I suspect a difference between the player communities, since I never saw that much assassins or dervishs in german PUGs than the US forum activity suggests. I never see such a high rate of melee classes in german PUGs - these consist of more ranged classes. On the other hand, there are almost always the monks missing most in PUGs. According to the german forum activity, there should not be any absence of monks, but in fact there are definitely too less monks even in german PUGs. I assume the numbers are still remains of the 600hp monk duo hype. The attached .zip file contains the original excel sheet. edit: You might see a correlation of the most popular classes in GW1 from my analysis to the first 4 announced classes for GW2. At least for the Wartower community. Last edited by Silmar Alech; Jan 08, 2011 at 05:10 PM // 17:10.. |

I personally don't think forum statistics can really give a good indication for most played profession, because it it usually not recent. In example, I believe my Guru profile has listed my Warrior as my character for a fair bunch of years, while I played most on my Elementalist.

Exactly. Considering everyone now has many class , it's hard to just say that way what is most played. In Game , it's obvious : there are probably as many warriors as sins :
- warrior because it's usually the first character people create - sin , because people want their ectos. It would be interesting to know which one is the least played though. It's probably either dervish , either paragon ( orly..) , but it's understandable since they never got any efficient use or any update... |

and a HUGE update to rits, mesmers etc since 09.....and once you have made an sos right, what exactly else do you need to talk about it? (use these skills-->kill)...not much need to elaborate unlike say, warrior, who has not only been around longer, was used in the holy trinity for a good long time and has a choice of weapons and such----much more to discuss on that front.... so yeah there will be more discussion about them.
would be interested in seeing the change in the discussions since 09----

The most played class is by far assassin. Rollfaceway (wota/esurge etc) in HA, standard shadow walk crap in gvg, perma shadow... I think most GWAMMs I see are sin also.
The best class will always be warrior :P |
